Library Madness

Friday, September 08, 2006
Libraries are scary places.

I never stepped in one during my school days... Not to study anyway... I'd use the library to zap notes, check mail, surf the net, and do subject registration... Anything BUT study... The atmosphere was always too quiet and too tense for me... the brain would stop functioning... which probably also explains why i never did that well in exams... same atmosphere... eeks! (of cos, it could also be the fact that i could never find a good place to study anywhere else either...)

but anyway, today's experience takes the cream.

It's proven that libraries are truly scary places.

I forced the Daddy to drag me out of bed early in the morning so that I can head down to the library to work (read: free public wireless)... Otherwise i'd sleep till 10 and feel like trash for not doing anything... I had breakfast with the Daddy and the Sister and headed down to the Library@Bugis...

Reached at about 830am... Didn't know that the study lounge only opens at 9am... But guess what I saw?

There were about 15-20 very hardworking students
sitting outside the lounge, waiting for it to be opened...

By the time it was 8.58am, there were about 40-50 of them... Everyone stood up when a library staff came around to check the room, and stayed standing even when the staff left and closed the door behind him...

9am... the electronic door unlocked by itself... the crowd RAN IN

and by 9.02am... I couldn't get a seat at a table... Got stuck sitting at the sofas... My only consolation is the power point next to me, for when my lappie runs out of batt...

I have the strangest suspicion that this room is the most crowded place in the entire NLB Central. 'cept maybe for the theatre when there's a performance... but that's different... The management should consider expanding the room and extending the opening hours... A couple of extra vending machines would be cool... I'm sure they can figure out a way to make it more economically viable... Surely the crowd must mean something to them??

Stupid Flixster

I'm a bloody laggard...

Flixster's been around for how long? and i'm only getting into it now... Mainly cos Liyi suddenly emails me with the Flixster quiz thingy... and bcos we haven't corresponded in ages, i actually do the quiz... being really sentimental... for a change...

But i must say, it's rather nice to see how my frens responded to my invites... (I didn't spam... Just selected the friends that I am closer to... ) Within two hours, 6 of my friends did the quiz! And the Flixster email to notify me that they had signed up was quite funny...

Hi [my name], [Fren's name] has accepted your invitation. He/She must love you very much. Awwwwww.

These Flixster people have a real sense of humour...

And thus far, I've discovered:
Lou is a friend
Shaun & JS are a terrible match with me
and
Kay & Mr X are my best friends!!

I PROMISE THE RESULTS WEREN'T RIGGED!

it's a real pity then that Mr X has gone back to the states though... no more 4 musketeers movie dates with Salt... shucks...

The Singapore Dream

Managed to catch Singapore Dreaming for free... the Mother works at the producer's alma mater... such useful connections really... I rather liked it... Even got to see Woffles Wu, Colin Goh, Woo Yen Yen, and Yeo Yann Yann in person...

it's by far, the most accessible artistic local film i've seen... which, to many, is probably a contradiction in itself... it seems that local directors and actors equate avant garde and artistic with incomprehensible... not that i have an issue with that... i love shows that make me think and question and brood... this is just a very different approach to the local films i've seen...

the story was nice, albeit a bit stereotypical and passe... the same types of characters so the story became predictable... the issues looked like they were important, then (at the time of the filming) but not so relevant now... there was a touch of the incredulous too... but maybe that's just film storytelling...

i loved the estab scenes... very homely... nice touch with the music... kudos to the excellent acting, especially Yeo Yann Yann... Oh, even spotted a little Eric Khoo in there, with the ghost bit...

the story was played up more than in Jack Neo films, simply because the humour was toned down... but it was still funny...

all in all, it's worth a watch... I mean, for the same price, you could be getting other really trashy foreign films... like snakes on a plane or something...

and seriously, a local film produced by a cosmetic surgeon??? the one who invented the non-surgical facelift no less... only in singapore then got can...

Reminiscing AT days

Finally started viewing the videos from Alphatrack...

couldn't stop laughing at some of those really precious moments...

it's almost impossible to choose which clips to distribute and which clips to trash so i'm keeping almost everything...

but i gotta stop for now...

feeling nauseous from the camera shake... *bleah

Loft Status

Monday, September 04, 2006
Ok, a lot of people who have visited the loft before have been very concerned about its current status.

After staying up till 4am, packing and moving things around, I'm pleased to report that the loft now looks...
GHASTLY

I think my loft has lost its soul... No more pretty silver things... No more interesting displays... Now it's just some unused space... ugh...

It was also a little upsetting to find out
in the morning that the painters are doing the exterior of the house first before painting the interior, and that i had another 3 more days to clear out the loft.

ahhh... (too tired to scream)

But still, the job is done... and appreciations are still in order...

我要感谢我的妈妈,我的爸爸,我的姐姐.. ok no, i'm kidding...

Thanx to MC... for hanging around THE ENTIRE TIME to tahan my whining and my complaints... the endless cries of "it's never gonna be done!!!". Always helpful to have a friend in another time zone...

Thanx to D... for staying up until 330am cos she had no school on mondays... Oh! and for being the new stalker to my blog and describing Kay as the scruffy guy... t'was a funny conversation...

Thanx also to Kay... even though he slept at 1am... for the sake of his students... but who promises that if not for school, would have stayed up to give moral support too...

Oh! And here's the reason i can't send out resumes...

the Recruit section has been used to wrap my table and protect it from paint... *snigger*

a Stella joke

Sunday, September 03, 2006
At the dinner table...

Preggie Sis (PS): Opps
Husband of Preggie Sis(HPS): What happened?
PS: Some tomato shot out of my mouth.
HPS pretends to wipe his face of tomato for extended length of time. PS & HPS laughs.

Non-preggie Sis (NPS) picks up PS's drink. Sips. Looks at drink again

NPS: Hey, there's something swimming in the drink
PS looks
PS: Oh, it's the tomato that spat out of my mouth.
Everyone: Ewww...
NPS looks like she's gonna gag

Boyfriend of Non-Preggie Sis (BNPS): Hey, maybe it reached Stella and came up again!
Everyone: EWWW...
NPS looks like she's gonna be sick and smacks BNPS

The nice song I heard in Kajang... & Laylay could tell me the song title and the singer! How cool is that??

waiting...等待

On that faithful day,
...will i see what i'm expecting to see?
...will i not?

when i see it, i'll hurt...
without seeing it, i'm hurting already...

but,
i keep waiting and expecting...
knowing that the expectation is bad...

i'm always waiting...
i'm good at waiting...
good at waiting for the other shoe to fall...

Not a groupie

so i leave a casual tag on ray's blog... also commenting that i sounded a little groupie... He advises me to check the meaning of the word...

Dictionary.Com turns up:

group‧ie
  [groo-pee]
–noun Informal
.
1.a young person, esp. a teenage girl, who is an ardent admirer of rock musicians and may follow them on tour.

Wikipedia turns up:

A groupie is a person who, while she/he may be a fan on some level, seeks intimacy (most often physical, sometimes emotional) with a famous person.

Female groupies in particular are known for a long-standing tradition of being available for, and willing to have, sexual intercourse with celebrities, rock stars, professional athletes, politicians, and other public figures regardless of the fact that the objects of their obsession may already be married with children, or otherwise already in a committed relationship.

Some groupie fantasies go so far as to create an imaginary world wherein they would be the replacements for their targets’ primary relationships (marrying them, or at least becoming their "road wife"), with some making themselves available to any famous celebrity (any rock band that rolls into town), while others focus closely on one particular target (and becoming a "regular").

And qu
oting from Almost Famous - Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near somebody famous.

eeks!!! I'm never using this word ever again...

my stupid mo'

soph cursed blogger for making it so difficult to put photos on the blog... and I concurred...

had the same problem with my long post about Rider's. I had like 10 pictures uploaded and I needed to make sure Jaden's picture wasn't in the place of the horse or something...

was dragging the silly pictures across the blog... across the words... when it suddenly struck me...

cut and paste the html code

stupid

Day trip!

Just got back from Rider's Lodge from a one day rest & relax trip...

Wanted to ride on a horse but i chickened out... Have you ever seen what happens when a chicken sits on the back of a horse? I hadn't, and I didn't intend to find out...

Good thing it was only for one day... There wasn't much to do... I only remember playing with the children and eating... and one hour of shopping... I took Kay's advice to do a sort of photo diary... to pass time...

Some people I met:

The grown man... A teacher... A husband...

...who tells corny jokes and is obsessed with killing the flies on the Lodge... Methinks Kay will one day grow up to be like him...

His exasperated wife...

...she's a nice lady actually.

The 泡妞高手 (his mum calls him that)

Jaden started sticking to me very early on in the trip... Not that I minded really... Always liked the upfront, direct kind of guy ...

Future Photog

Jolie, Jaden's big sis. She's is gonna be a real cool photog someday... Parents gave her a digicam at 3! She takes candid shots... Paparazzi or photojournalist... There's much potential in this one...

Ice Princess

Kaitlin took hours to get used to me... And it required my excellent playacting skills before i could make her grin... She's really pretty... Like a little korean doll... She's also an ice princess for another reason... At 4 years, she is extremely comfortable on ice skates and blades...

Leng Zai

Joshua, Kaitlin's handsome big brother. 'Nuff said.

And my own mummy...

The Fine Dining Experience:

the waiter serves iced water in a tall glass...
...one fly comes around and gets shooed off

the radio plays swing music...
...two flies come around and get shooed off

the fish arrives shrivelled and grilled on a potato patty with a fat stalk of boiled 小白菜
...three flies come around and get shooed off

the noisy teacher describes fine dining as 吃不饱又饿不死...
...three flies come around and stick around

the dessert of brownies and vanilla ice cream is served...
...a fly drowns in my glass of 2004 Margaret River

After that, the table is officially their property...
...I swear I saw the flies grooving to the music

The Surprise Proposal: (Not for me la...)

When the tour bus arrived back at the hotel after a quick shopping trip, we were met with the entire entourage of bellboys and waiters, flowers lining the entrance, and a goofy looking guy with his guitar, waiting for his girlfriend...

whispers go around the group... "he's gonna propose!"

he plays Jason Mraz's You & I Both. (good song!) she tries to make him stop. he continues. he gives her a hand bouquet of roses, gets down on one knee, takes out the ring box. gives a little speech about how he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. asks if she will marry him. she asks what can she say. he says she can say no. she doesn't of cos. he gets up. they kiss.

applause. camera flashes go off. (seriously)

a perfectly executed proposal. this romantic is blown away.

I think I need a holiday from this holiday...
